Offshore Rig Workers Deserve Wages for All Hours Worked!
Fibich Hampton Can Help
Offshore rig workers include cooks, janitors and maintenance employees. Offshore workers are entitled to receive wages for all of the time they spend performing job-related tasks that benefit their employer -- including work on the rig as well as time spent getting there.
Rig workers should be paid for mobilizing
Rig workers should be paid for mobilizing to and from the rig. One of the key wage issues facing offshore employees is pay for mobilizing to and demobilizing from the offshore rig. This is a necessary part of the employees’ work which clearly benefits the employer by allowing the employees to access the job site and perform their tasks. As such, the law requires that the offshore rig employees be paid for their transportation time.

Training & attending meetings are paid work
Training and attending meetings are part of offshore employees’ paid work. Offshore rig employees also are entitled to be paid for the time they spend training, drug testing and attending tool box meetings or safety meetings at the beginning or end of their shifts. All of these activities are required by the employer and benefit the employer by ensuring a more skilled workforce and safer work environment.
To the extent these activities push the employee past 40 hours is a single work week, the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) mandates that the employee be paid over time at 1 ½ times their normal hourly wage.
Unfortunately, employers have a history of not calculating this correctly, to the detriment of their employees.
